Sewage testing legislation was introduced as the discharge of raw sewage can create a health hazard, cause damage to the marine environment and, in coastal areas, can lead to oxygen depletion and obvious visual pollution. MARPOL Annex IV, (resolution MEPC.115(51)), came into force on 27th September 2008. It applies to ships on international voyages which are either 400gt and greater or less than 400gt when certified to carry more than 15 persons, which includes passengers and crew.

Hatchtite™
Identify the exact location of cargo hatch leaks
Early detection reduces your cost
Single crew member operation
Test your hatches even when carrying cargo
ABS Type Approval
Ultrasonic Hatch Cover Testing Device
Hatchtite™ is a lightweight, portable and robust instrument for accurate and reliable cargo hatch cover testing for water tightness on bulk carriers. We currently offer Hatchtite Economy and Hatchtite Premium. Hatchtite Premium includes 2 microphones, re-chargeable batteries and a leather case for both the receiver and transmitter.
By using Hatchtite™ to ensure your hatch covers are watertight, you can prevent cargo damage and also avoid failing inspection by the Insurance and Charterers’ surveyor. Unlike hose and chalk tests, Hatchtite™ allows you to identify the exact location of the leak – saving you time. Hatchtite™ indicates when you actually have the required compression to prevent water from getting into the hold space, meaning you can identify any leaks very early and thus reduce repair costs. The simplified testing procedure of Hatchtite™ removes the need for a crew member to be inside the cargo hold during the test, which means that the testing can be carried out by a single member of the crew.
Hatchtite™ uses a transmitter placed inside the cargo hold emitting ultrasound waves. With the hatch covers closed, a handheld telescopic microphone is used at the hatch cover interfaces. The unit can even be used with partially or fully filled cargo holds, meaning testing can be carried out at any time without interrupting your ship’s operations. The system is Type Approved by ABS, fully compliant with IACS Unified Requirement U.R.Z17 and approved by insurers and P & I clubs.
Bulksafe™
Easiest and most compact system on the market to install

Water Ingress Detection System
Bulksafe™ is a permanent ship’s hold water ingress detection system (WIDS) for bulk carriers. The system comprises of a central Bulksafe™ control and alarm panel interfacing, with intrinsically safe MMS900 water level detectors installed in each compartment.
The unique design of MMS900 water level detectors allows them to be installed so that they are totally isolated from the cargo and protected from mechanical damage during cargo operations. They can be installed without the need for any structural alterations or piping work within the cargo holds. Each MMS900 level switch is totally corrosion-proof, protected against dust ingress and carries a lifetime warranty.
The Bulksafe™ control and alarm panel indicates the alarm status for each named compartment with discrete signals for 0.5m and 2m alarm levels. The system incorporates an optional function to provide a fully automatic ‘in-situ’ functional test of all detectors, even whilst cargo is present in the holds. With integral safety barriers, the Bulksafe™ is the most compact system available on the market.

Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)
Activates automatically on immersion in water or manually
Alerts via traditional 121.5MHz or VHF DSC
Indicates GPS position via AIS every minute
Individual MMSI identification
Multiple targets can be tracked simultaneously
Up to 75-mile range with worldwide satellite coverage
Built-in flashing light enhances visual detection
Utilises existing 121.5MHz receivers/SARfinders
The worlds most advanced man overboard device
90% of man overboard accidents (MOB) occur in calm seas
Sadly, more than half of these incidents result in fatality.
Given these shocking statistics, it’s surprising that there is currently no regulation in place for crews to be provided with a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), outside of the fishing industry.
You’ll no doubt be aware of the regulations surrounding life jackets but without a PLB a MOB situation relies on luck alone for your safe return.
Are you missing a vital factor in the MASLOW of survival in MOB situations?
Less than 50% of those who fall overboard survive. When isolating this to cruise liners, where passengers and crew are less likely to be equipped with lifejackets/ PLB’s the fatality rate jumps to 86%.
With floatation and insulation covered, you still need to be located ASAP in order to be extracted as quickly as possible.
It is here where survival relies on rapid alarm and accurate location.

LegionellaMAX
The most reliable Legionella testing kit on the market
Tests both water samples and biofilms
Rapid results in 35 minutes
Easy to use – no training required
Supports risk assessment
Legionella Testing
Man-made water systems can be a breeding ground for harmful Legionella bacteria, and the pipe system on your vessel is no different.
Under MLC 2006, you have a duty to conduct and document water testing on all consumable water supplies, whether it be for drinking, cooking or even cleaning. Failure to complete these inspections frequently can have disastrous effects on both your crews’ health and your reputation.
The LegionellaMAX Test Kit does away with time-consuming lab-based testing, giving you INSTANT results so you can treat your system ASAP.
This easy-to-use test can be fully conducted on-site with no formal training and delivers rapid results within 35 minutes. It’s the most advanced, accurate and versatile technology which rapidly detects Legionella bacteria, both in water samples and biofilms taken from any source.
Can your current testing method match that?
Benefits of LegionellaMAX
100X EFFICIENCY – Improving the previous market-leading test to 0.1 CFUper ML.
UNRIVALLED ON-BOARD TESTING – Tests both water samples and biofilms taken from any source.
RAPID RESULTS – Simple “positive or negative” result within 35 minutes. The control line also indicates that the test is working correctly.
EASE OF USE – No formal training required. The pre-filled syringe containing recovery buffer and the pre-filled vials means there’s no need to measure or dilute solutions.
About LegionellaMAX
- Contains all the items required to perform 4 tests (2 water samples and 2 biofilm tests).
- Designed to test for Legionella in both water and biofilms in risk areas identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as showers, industrial and domestic water systems, spas and bathtubs.
- Uses an immunochromatographic assay to detect the presence of cell surface antigens from Legionella bacteria in a sample. The presence of antigen causes the “Test Line” to turn red in colour.
- The filtration step concentrates the Legionella bacteria to achieve a sensitivity level of 0.01 CFU/ ML in water samples, and a sensitivity of 0.02 CFU/ML in biofilms.
Sewage Effluent Test Kit
The only combined portable Sewage Effluent and Potable Water Test Kit
Guaranteed to be the most cost-effective solution on the market
Only replace what you use – you’ll never need to buy a full kit again
No formal training required
Sewage Water Testing
This all-in-one portable water testing solution makes compliance with complex sewage discharge legislation easy. The Sewage Effluent Test Kit is designed to provide you with simple test methods which are guaranteed to be the most economical you will find or your money back. The kit requires no formal training and is the only all-in-one solution to guarantee complete compliance with the MLC 2006 and MARPOL ANNEX IV on-board water testing legislation.
All applicable vessels will need to maintain the system in line with the effluent standards or risk detention. The Martek Marine Effluent Test Kit provides simple tests for Permanganate Value, pH, Suspended Solids, Probable BOD, COD and TOC. The kit provides all the necessary tests to guarantee compliance for all commercial vessels. Crews who carry out regular testing will be able to take corrective action which will keep efficiency high whilst keeping downtime to a minimum and reducing costs. Our spares service means you only buy the full kit once and then replace what you use. This means you’ll reduce waste whilst reducing costs.
MARPOL Annex IV
MEPC.2(VI):
- Coliforms – up to 250 CFU/100ml
- Total Suspended Solids (TSS) (onboard) – up to 100 mg/l
- Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) – up to 50 mg/l
MEPC.159(55):
- Coliforms – up to 100 CFU/100ml

ALCO XS™
Immediate test results
Pre-calibrated cell so no need to send ashore for annual calibration
Simplest on-board alcohol testing solution
DOT Approved Alcohol Screening Device (ASD)
On-board Alcohol Testing
The ALCO XS™ is a unique new marine breath alcohol tester (breathalyser) that never requires re-calibration. ALCO XS™ saves you a fortune compared to your conventional breathalysers which need sending ashore for annual calibration or, worse still, annual replacement of the whole breathalyser. This is an extreme waste.
Instead, all you need to do is insert the pre-calibrated ALCO XS™ sensor cell every year (which takes a few seconds) and ALCO XS™ is ready to use and certified accurate for a further 12 months – what could be easier?
ALCO XS™ is designed specifically to meet the new “Manila Amendments” to the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch-keeping (STCW) – you should check your current breathalysers to see if they have the required accuracy to meet these new limits as many don’t.
Note: The Department of Transport approves 2 levels of screening device; Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) and Evidential Breath Testing (EBT). The ALCO XS™ is DOT approved for ASD testing. If you require printouts to record readings, you will require an EBT device.
CoronaSafe+™ (COVID-19 Respiratory Virus PCR Swabs)
Highly sensitive swab test
Government standard clinical testing method
Results in 48 hours
Can be conducted by an individual or medical personnel
Support when administering test & understanding results
COVID-19 Respiratory Virus PCR Swabs
CoronaSafe+™ is a highly sensitive respiratory PCR swab test which provides detection of COVID-19. The PCR test kit detects
the genetic information of the virus, the RNA. This is only possible if the virus is present and someone is actively infected.
PCR tests are used to directly detect the presence of an antigen, rather than the presence of the body’s immune response
or antibodies. By detecting viral RNA, which will be present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease
are present, the tests can tell whether or not someone has the virus early on. PCR testing is a government standard clinical
testing method.
The best test protocol for an early infection is combining the CoronaSafe™ antibody test AND the CoronaSafe+™ PCR test which is reported to achieve a 98.6% detection rate within the first 5.5 days of infection. Results can be achieved generally in 48 hours.
Why It’s Critical For Ships To Screen Crew For COVID-19 To Fulfil New EU & IMO Guidelines
Antigen tests which are often referred to as PCR tests, directly detect the virus itself using swabs from the nose and throat and have a high accuracy rate. The swab is then sent to an accredited laboratory for testing. The International Maritime Health Association (IMHA) in April recommended the use of PCR tests antigen tests stating:
“If possible test every seafarer with respiratory symptoms with a throat swab (PCR) to identify if they have COVID-19.”
The has IMO stated that:
“Any person on board that may have been in contact with a suspected case should be…. Asked to remain onboard until laboratory [antigen] results of the suspect case are available”
Guidelines from the World Health Organisation recommended that a clinically recovered COVID-19 patient should test negative for the virus twice, with tests conducted at least 24 hours apart. Antigen PCR tests are the critical test for this scenario.
How To Use
- Check swab expiry date before use
- Using the same testing swab stick, take a throat and nose swab
- Place the testing swab into its transport tube and fill out the relevant clinical dates
- Send samples as soon as possible at ambient temperature for clinical review
- If samples are delayed, samples may be stored at room temperature for up to 24 hours
Throat Swab Test
- Clean hands and put appropriate PPE
- Insert the dry viral swab stick into mouth, and swab the posterior pharynx and tonsillar areas. Avoid the tongue
- Remove swab from the throat and begin the nose swab test with same stick
Nose Swab Test
- Ask patient to blow their nose into a tissue if able. Then ask them to wash their hands
- Put on appropriate PPE
- Using the same swab as used for the throat, insert swab straight backwards through the nostril (not upwards) along the floor of the nasal passage until you feel resistance
- Rotate the swab a few times and leave in place for few seconds
- Remove swab and package the specimen

Covid-19 Antibody Screening Test
CoronaSafe™ is a finger prick COVID-19 antibody screening test which provides detection of COVID-19 infection from a single drop of blood within 10 minutes. It’s been proven in extensive clinical trials of 1,585 patients during the recent outbreak, with 98.02% clinical specificity, 98.81% sensitivity and 96.85% accuracy.
CoronaSafe™ detects the presence of two key IgG & IgM immunoglobin biomarkers of COVID-19. IgM levels in blood rise quickly and are detectable from 3+ days after infection with IgG levels rising after 7 days. CoronaSafe™ detects both immunoglobulin biomarkers together helping give an accurate diagnosis of the progress of infection, including previous infections which could indicate acquired immunity.
CoronaSafe™ Test Kit contains the following:
- 40 – COVID-19 Test Kit (Test, Dropper, Buffer Solution)
- 80 – Nitrile Disposable Gloves (40 pairs)
- 40 – Disposable Lancets (1 use)
- 80 – Professional Pre-injection Swabs (70% Alcohol)
How To Use
1. Use the lancet/click device to prick thumb/finger
2. Collect drop of blood in the capillary tube
3. Eject the blood drop into the sample well
4. Add 3 drops of buffer to the sample well
5. Wait 10 minutes and observe the results
Interpreting The Results
- IgG and IgM POSITIVE – Indicates that it may be a recent infection with COVID-19
- IgG POSITIVE – Indicates that it may be a previous infection with COVID-19
- IgM POSITIVE – Indicates that it may be a recent infection with COVID-19
- NEGATIVE – Indicates that it may be no infection with COVID-19, or there is not enough detectable antibodies in the early infection
Credentials & Quality Assurance
The test is certified by ISO and has been registered with MHRA for sale in the UK for professional use.
