CONFIGURATIONS

Configurations

NAVIGUIDE 4000

Based on the control area network, the Ship Steering Control Network forms the backbone of the Control System, which is one of the first to implement the U.S. National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 2000 Data Communications standard.

NAVIGUIDE 4000 Follow-up (FU)/Non-Follow up (NFU)

Follow-Up and Non Follow-Up configurations are available for the NAVIGUIDE 4000. The different steering gear control system configurations are described as follows:

Non-Follow-up: (NFU)

NFU Steering control is the cost-effective and safest means of steering control, but not very comfortable. The rudder moves as long as the NFU-Tiller is operated and stops, when the tiller is released or the rudder limits are reached.

Follow-up (FU): (autopilot & manual)

The rudder follows the preset angle (rudder command) of the FU Handwheel and stops when this is reached. FU steering is a control of the rudder angle. It requires a Steering Control Unit (FU-amplifier) and a feedback unit in addition to the Handwheel. FU steering is more comfortable/user-friendly than NFU.

Dual Follow-up

Dual Follow-up provides separated controls to each steering gear by means of two SCUs, each controlled by a separate potentiometer of the FU-Handwheel. A single failure only causes a loss of control of one steering gear. Dual FU is mandatory with certain classification societies or notations.

It is mandatory by IMO/SOLAS to have two electric steering gears that are completely independent, also with regards to the power supply. Usually, there are two separate steering gears, each with its own steering pump, solenoid valves etc.

RUDDER ANGLE INDICATOR

Rudder Angle Indicator

NAVIGUIDE 4000

The Rudder Angle Indication system is separate to the steering system and is for indication only. It is an IMO requirement to have this system independently from the steering control system. Rudder angle indication is required for each steering position and at the emergency steering position in the steering gear room.

The different regulatory bodies vary on the requirements on the Rudder Angle Indicators (RAI). DNV requires a second, independent rudder angle indication system on the bridge. Panama Canal regulation requires large instruments (192x192mm minimum) on the bridge wings, visible for the pulling train operators and the IMO/MED (ISO 20673) requires the accuracy of the system to be above 1 degree.

Rudder Angle Indicators for Every Need

Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine rudder angle indicator systems are characterised by a diversity of different indicators, to fulfil the individual customer needs and regulations. The Rudder Angle Indicators are in different sizes, scales, type of installations and protection grades. In addition three-face rudder angle indicators with a 270° panoramic indication are offered.

Rudder Angle Calibrator

To meet IMO regulations for accuracy, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine developed the Rudder Angle Calibrator (RAC). This is the central unit of the RAI system that provides NMEA outputs with the rudder angle, for Voyage Data Recorder and/or ECDIS/Conning Display.

A total of 6 indicators can be connected to each RAC, including the feedback unit and each can be calibrated separately. Where there are more than 6 indicators, an additional Rudder Angle Calibrator is required.

NAVIPILOT 4000
PRODUCT

The NAVIPILOT 4000

The NAVIPILOT 4000 Marine Autopilot uses advanced ship steering control network technology to steer a ship safely and efficiently. The innovative NAVIPILOT 4000 is capable of tuning itself to adapt automatically to the ship’s load characteristics and weather conditions.

Key Benefits of NAVIGAT 4000 Marine Autopilot:

  • Fully self-tuning, adaptive heading control
  •   Manual selection of steering strategy to suit weather conditions
  •   Rate and radius control modes
  •   Meets the requirements of all major classification societies
  •   Ease of use with logical arrangement of sealed foil keyboard

Efficient Fuel Consumption

The highly reliable NAVIPILOT 4000 ensures continuous self-tuning adaptation for accurate steering and efficient fuel consumption, which is unique to all other autopilots in the marine industry.

Each single rudder activity increases fuel consumption and cost. For this purpose the NAVIPILOT 4000 can adapt automatically to the current weather and sea conditions.

Track Control

Track Control (also referred to as “Tracksteering”) combines an ECDIS with the Autopilot. The navigator can program a voyage plan into the ECDIS that contains one or more tracks. Track Control with a NAVIPILOT 4000 marine autopilot is type-approved (category B/C) when connected to a Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT ECDIS.

The autopilot system receives its orders from the Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine ECDIS and transmits steering commands to the steering system. The orders may be manual changes of wanted heading, turn radius or rate of turn or it may be orders originating from track control along a selected route. Together with Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine Bridge ECDIS and Conning Information Display, the Integrated Bridge Autopilot forms a complete system for automatic track control.

Control Area Network (CAN)

Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine developed the first steering system using a Control Area Network (CAN). The CAN connects a various number of steering controllers, including the Autopilot Control and Display Unit into a network. With this, the installation is made far more simple and fast. Also, later extension of the system is very simple.

Override for Evasive Manoeuvres

Override is a means to immediately take control of the steering in the event that an evasive manoeuvre is necessary or a malfunction occurs at the autopilot. When activated, the control is transferred to the Override Non-Follow-Up Controller and the vessel is steered in manual control (non-follow up), until the Override mode is ended by the operator.

STEERING CONTROL SYSTEMS

Steering Control Systems

Total Steering Systems

Non-Follow-Up

A non-follow-up system actuates the  solenoid valves by controlling  the steering actuator. Upon a steering request the valve(s) open completely, resulting in full force being applied to the rudder as long as input is given. Upon removal of the steering request the valve(s) closes again (time dependent control).

Full Follow-Up

A full follow-up system applies position feedback. The required rudder position is set on the steering control(s), upon which the solenoid valves are opened to control the steering actuator.
The actual position and requested position are continuously compared, resulting in automatic closure of the valves upon reaching the desired position (position dependent control).

Types of Solenoid Valves

Bang-Bang (black/white) Solenoid Valves

Bang-Bang solenoid valves are only capable of opening and closing completely. Once opened, full available force is applied to the rudder. Once closed, the rudder-applied force is terminated promptly.
This results in a fast response type of characteristic.

Proportional Solenoid Valves

Proportional solenoid valves are capable of opening and closing gradually. This results in a smooth increase of force being applied to the rudder. Upon closure of the valves, power is gradually reduced to zero resulting in a deceleration of the actuator. This results in smooth and accurate steering characteristics.

Integrated Navigation & Bridge Systems
VisionMaster Net
PRODUCT

VisionMaster Net

Simple. Solid. Smart.

VisionMaster Net is the networked bridge solution from Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, the industry leader for system quality and support. It simplifies deployment, increases system availability and creates the foundation for “big data” on the vessel to improve operational efficiency, while reducing through-life costs.

Current systems

Current Integrated Bridge Systems are often cable intense, with many point-to-point connections between components that are slow to install, difficult to service and typically less resilient. Functionality is often hardware-based, which is costly to maintain if a service engineer is required on board or components need to be replaced. And such systems do not enable the ship-to-shore data that will drive improved operational efficiencies.

VisionMaster Net

VisionMaster Net’s distributed architecture is easier to install with fewer components to connect and less cables to pull, while increasing resilience through a fully redundant network. Its modular design allows any combination of equipment to be easily integrated over an Ethernet ring, using standard cables to simplify installation further.

The system offers complete flexibility in how panel PC displays are configured, which take up less space in the bridge design to suit any size of vessel. Its intuitive interface minimises the need for re-training and increased software functionality enables more efficient maintenance and upgrades. VisionMaster Net is the networked bridge solution that helps ship owners and shipyards remain competitive in an ever-changing market.

Complete solution

VisionMaster Net provides the infrastructure for a networked bridge solution that incorporates the full VisionMaster Net family of products: Radar, Chart Radar, ECDIS, Conning Information Display, Central Alert Manager and TotalWatch. All VisionMaster Net products are designed with common hardware platforms and a consistent user interface for more efficient bridge management and enhanced safety at sea.

SIMPLE

SIMPLE

VisionMaster Net

Easy to install

VisionMaster Net’s distributed architecture makes installation much easier, with fewer components to connect and less cables to pull. All elements have industry standard interfaces for either CAT6 Ethernet or fibre optic cabling, to meet any cable length requirements and any bridge layout.

Easy to integrate

The system is designed as a modular network over an Ethernet ring for all sensors required in a bridge system, including the radar transceiver. Any combination of VisionMaster Net and third party equipment can be easily integrated into any configuration to create a networked bridge solution for any vessel.

Increased flexibility

VisionMaster Net allows more flexibility in how displays are configured. Any data feeds can be shown on any screen to optimise situational awareness. The system’s panel PCs take up less space and allow more flexibility in designing the bridge layout. And the overall reduction in system components make it suitable for installation on the smallest vessels to the largest container ships.

Easy to use

VisionMaster Net uses the same intuitive interface as VisionMaster FT, with the same uniform presentation of screens to streamline navigational tasks and optimise time for observation and decision-making. This minimises the need for re-training, which simplifies implementation.

SOLID

SOLID

VisionMaster Net

Increased resilience

VisionMaster Net’s ring topology provides a higher level of redundancy than conventional point-to-point systems. It also supports dual-homed LAN configurations for full redundancy, ensuring there is no single point of failure. And the system’s simplified design, with less components, less connections and less cabling, helps increase resilience and overall system availability.

Complete support

VisionMaster Net is backed up by Sperry Marine’s global service network, which is one of the most extensive in the industry. This encompasses over 150 in-house service engineers based in 20 offices worldwide, complemented by more than 100 service representatives. All marine service engineers are continually trained and certified to the highest standards.

They provide a full turnkey service from requirements analysis, installation, preventative service and maintenance, to provision of spare parts and on-call shipboard services in every major seaport on a 24/365 basis to minimise operational downtime.

SMART

SMART

VisionMaster Net

Improved operational efficiency

VisionMaster Net provides the foundation for big data on the vessel, to collect whatever navigational data is needed from ship sensors to improve operational efficiency. It enables smart maintenance of on-board systems to reduce downtime and through-life costs, and improve in-port turnaround times when repairs are required.

It supports e-navigation for ship-to-shore route planning and optimisation, so changes can be made during the passage to reduce fuel costs, meet schedules or avoid bad weather.

Reduced through-life costs

VisionMaster Net is designed to be more cost-efficient throughout the system’s life. Its distributed architecture reduces the number of components to connect, and therefore labour costs to pull and terminate fewer cables.

Industry standard interfaces across all components allow the use of CAT6 Ethernet or fibre optic cabling rather than higher-cost custom cables. Increased software functionality removes the need for an interswitch, while enabling more efficient upgrades instead of costly hardware replacement.

IMO Compliance

VisionMaster FT ECDIS

This web page allows mariners to check that their ECDIS meets the applicable IHO standards. IMO’s “ECDIS – Guidance for Good Practice” published in MSC.1/Circ.1503 states that, for a ship to use ECDIS to meet the chart carriage requirements of SOLAS, the ECDIS must be maintained to be compliant with the applicable International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standards.

A list of current IHO Standards in force is maintained on the IHO website at the page https://iho.int/en/standards-in-force

It should be noted that on the 31st August 2017 the IHO withdrew the previous versions of S-52, the S-52 Presentation Library, and S-64. From this point forwards, all VisionMaster ECDIS must have been updated to version 9.0 or later software in order to continue to meet the chart carriage requirements.

The page contains information for Sperry Marine’s ECDIS-E, VisionMaster FT ECDIS and VisionMaster FT TotalWatch products.

ADMIRALTY OVERLAY

Admiralty Overlay

VisionMaster FT ECDIS

Admiralty Overlay now available with new software release

Northrop Grumman’s VisionMaster FT (VMFT) software now includes Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) as an integral element of its Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) based navigation system making additional chart information available to ships’ navigators.

AIO is a service provided by the UKHO to overlay Temporary and Preliminary Notices to Mariners over digital chart data. Traditionally, these notices would have to be manually entered onto the ECDIS by the navigator after receiving a weekly update – with AIOs this now happens automatically. VisionMaster FT 5.6 is approved by UKHO’s standards, is Lloyds Register type approved and has recently been released to improve both navigation and operational capabilities.

VisionMaster SeaGuard
PRODUCT

VisionMaster SeaGuard

Every target. Every condition. Every time.

Instant detection of small targets in all conditions

VisionMaster SeaGuard is the first commercial radar to instantly detect small targets in all conditions. Based on solid-state technology, it offers the highest levels of precision and resilience to significantly improve your situational awareness.

Today’s challenge

Standard navigation radars struggle to detect smaller targets at sea. Search and rescue is especially difficult and delays incurred trying to find people lost overboard are incredibly costly and disruptive. Navigating safely amongst many small craft is equally challenging, with their course and speed changing very quickly. Heavy rain and high sea states compound the problem of detecting small targets. Even navigating safely in open waters is difficult in such conditions with reduced detection range.

VisionMaster SeaGuard

Its unique multi-beam operation with high resolution, high definition performance and advanced clutter reduction is purposely designed to detect people in the water, small craft in congested seas or potential threats in piracy-prone areas. And operators can choose different user profiles for different scenarios to help improve efficiency further.

The radar’s unique real-time automatic tracking capability provides an instant update on target positions – crucial when small craft are moving and changing course much more rapidly.

VisionMaster SeaGuard successfully detects small targets with a very high probability – even in heavy rain and high sea states – to deliver improvements in operational efficiency and safety that easily justify the additional investment.

NAVIKNOT
PRODUCT

NAVIKNOT

Multisensor Speed Log Series

The NAVIKNOT Multisensor Speed Log Series offers unlimited flexibility and has been designed with the most modern computer tools for application on all types of vessels. The Speed Logs of Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine measures Speed Over Ground (SOG) and Speed Through Water (STW) with a speed accuracy of +/-1% or 0.1kn whichever is greater.

The NAVIKNOT’s display provides ships water and ground speed information in an accessible way, for ease of use, quick interpretation and berthing and docking operations.

Benefits of the NAVIKNOT series:

  •    Varied selection of speed and distance interfaces
  •    Suitable for all types of vessels ranging from small pleasure craft to the largest crude carriers
  •    Simple and low-cost installation
  •    Type approved by Germanischer Lloyd to Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 96/98/EC
  •    Support of docking manoeuvres by displaying the necessary information

Single and dual axis speed logs, 600 series with docking function, are available. The speed logs provide information about transversal and longitudinal ship’s speed. The systems can be interfaced with most modern peripheral equipment and speed output can be transmitted to ARPA radar, ECDIS, AIS, VDR,  etc.

Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine provides electromagnetic sensors, doppler transducers and satellite sensors as follows:

Electromagnetic Sensor (Single-Axis Water Speed)

The electromagnetic sensor houses a coil which, when energised with an AC current, produces a magnetic field around the sensor in the surrounding water. The ship’s motion through the water produces an electrical field  perpendicular to the magnetic field  and the ship’s motion. The resulting signal is picked up by the sensor electrodes and fed to the preamplifier, where it is converted into a digital format and transmitted to the NAVIKNOT electronics unit.

Doppler Transducer (Single-Axis Water Speed)

The Doppler transducer utilizes the Doppler frequency shift effect to determine the speed of a vessel through water. The transducer emits high-frequency sound pulses in the fore and aft directions through two transmitter windows. Two receiver windows in the transducer detect the return echo of the sound pulses. A time delay between pulse transmissions ensures that echoes are received from the undisturbed water outside the vessel’s boundary layer. The signals are processed to determine the ship’s fore/aft speed vector. The preamplifier transmits the speed information in a digital format to the NAVIKNOT electronics unit.

Satellite Sensor (Dual-Axis Ground Speed)

The satellite sensor makes use of GPS satellite signals to determine a ship’s longitudinal and transverse ground speeds. Two GPS receivers and three rate gyros integrated in an electronics unit, and a dual antenna unit, determine a vessel’s heading velocity, course and attitude. While the heading is referenced to the ship’s fore-and-aft line, the velocity and course represent the motion vector, i.e. the magnitude and direction of its motion over ground.

The information received from the satellites is processed in the electronics unit, which resolves the velocity data into the ship’s longitudinal and transverse ground speeds. The speed vectors combined with the rate-of-turn data are used to discern between translational and rotational movement of the vessel. These are used to determine the bow and stern transverse speeds shown in the docking display.

NAVIKNOT FEATURES

NAVIKNOT Features

NAVIKNOT Speed Velocity Log

The NAVIKNOT Multisensor Speed Log Series is a new generation in a long line of successful Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine speed logs. The 350, 450 and 600 series offer unlimited flexibility and have been designed with the most modern computer tools for application on all types and sizes of vessels including cruise ships, container ships, tankers, megayachts and a wide variety of other crafts, both new build and retrofit.

Flexible and Innovative

The speed log measurement capability at slow speed is vital for precise docking of tankers to oil loading and unloading facilities, as well as safe navigation in narrow channels or straits. Operation at high speed assists economical cruising in open seas. While retaining the measurement accuracy the time for installation and space required for installation will be reduced.
