MIMO Antennas
MIMO antennas, from Cobham, are compact and rugged with increased diversity-gain using dual-polarisation.
MIMO is the use of multiple antennas at either the transmitter or receiver, or both, to improve communication performance. In order to achieve optimum performance both the transmitter and receiver must support MIMO.
To provide the greatest benefit to the customer the majority of Cobham’s MIMO antennas take advantage of ‘polarisation diversity’. This means using orthogonal polarisations within the same aperture, either Vertical and Horizontal or ±45° polarisations.
This avoids the need for multiple units placed a number of wavelengths apart and results in compact antenna units which are highly efficient. This allows for significant increases in data throughput without requiring additional bandwidth and provides cost savings in antenna installation.
- Increased diversity-gain using dual-polarisation
- Space-efficient antennas
- Polarisation diversity (vertical and horizontal, ±45° dual-slant or right and left circular)
- Greater coverage using multiple sector antennas in conjunction with higher order MIMO systems (eg 4 x 4)
- Minimise signal drop-out for a moving source

The 4-Channel Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is capable of driving four independent brushless DC motor windings and is capable of interfacing with a resolver for position feedback and motor commutation.
- The heart of the ECU is an FPGA-based controller board. Three FPGAs provide the control logic as well as perform functions such as servo control, process input commands and generation of Pulse Width Modulated outputs.
- The ECU contains two electrically isolated sections. The motor drive circuitry is connected directly to the 28 VDC power bus, which is isolated from chassis ground. The low-level logic circuits, including the FPGA’s and telemetry, are tied to chassis ground, and are connected to the motor drivers by high-speed optocouplers.
Voice Coils
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions can tailor a motor for your specific application. This customization can include size variations and winding characteristics to accommodate power supply availability, performance parameters and physical mounting requirements.
The voice coil is an electromagnetic actuator in its simplest form. Voice coil actuators come in two forms; rotary and linear. A linear voice coil will move in a back and forth motion and the rotary voice coil moves in an arc.
Voice coil actuators are ideal when a inertial mass needs to be accelerated quickly or positioned accurately. The control circuit to drive a voice coil is not complicated as a voice coil does not require commutation.
A voice coil is a two-element device. There will be a coil assembly and a permanent magnet assembly. The coil assembly is inserted into the permanent magnet field. When current passes through the coil a magnetic flux field a force is produced at a right angle to the direction of the current. This produces the back and forth motion of a voice coil.
Features

Brushless DC Motors
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions offers brushless DC motors in 2 or 3 phase and with optional commutation.
Brushless DC motors have many advantages over their brushed DC motor counterparts, the most significant being that there are many fewer parts that can wear and need to be replaced than in a brushed motor.
Another advantage of a brushless motor is that it is also capable of operating with less noise and electromagnetic interference than a brushed motor because its internal parts are completely enclosed.
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions designs custom brushless DC motors for high reliability applications. Please contact us with your requirements.
Stepper Motors
Stepper motors provide precise motion without the need for position feedback or commutation. Our stepper motors are available in unipolar or bipolar configuration and 1º to 90º step angles.
When considering a stepper motor for an application there are several parameters that require evaluation. In many cases the designer is limited due to existing drive electronics. Parameters to consider when evaluating stepper motors are:

Built to Cobham’s uncompromising quality standards, the SAILOR 3695 UHF Fire Fighter radio is fully ATEX approved and meets the highest specifications for maximum safety and reliability.
Value and Performance
Cobham SATCOM has developed an exceptional radio package that is not only a cost-effective solution for shipowners to meet the SOLAS deadline, but a highly reliable and effective communication tool that can be counted on by fire fighters in extreme, hazardous environments.
Based on Cobham SATCOM’s series of SAILOR portable work, GMDSS and ATEX radios, the SAILOR 3965 UHF Fire Fighter radio has been designed specifically to keep fire fighters safe through reliable, function-rich communication.
The radio is available in several different packages to meet different vessel needs and a comprehensive list of features maximises safety and operational efficiency. This includes meeting all standards set out in Regulation 10.10.4., such as CTCSS to avoid interference from other nearby vessels and Trunked Mode Operation (TMO) for vessels with a repeater system.
Emergency Ready
The SAILOR 3695 UHF Fire Fighter radio has been purpose-built to help Fire Parties operate as effectively as possible in any situation.
The radio features an easy to read display for channel and battery information and is compatible with a wide range of established 3rd party accessories from SAVOX and Peltor. Considering the potential for low or zero visibility due to smoke during a fire, it also has large, tactile buttons and provides audio confirmations straight to the operator’s headset.

As standard, it features an ATEX 1.800 mAh rechargeable Li-Ion Battery, IP67 battery pack. However, Cobham SATCOM also offers ATEX-approved non-rechargeable emergency batteries to ensure it is ready for use at any time, or when rechargeable batteries expire.

Airframe Cable Assemblies
Cable assemblies manufactured by Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions cover broad frequency ranges from DC to 50 GHz. Mission-critical high-performance airborne cables are lightweight and exhibit extremely low loss.
Airborne cable assemblies must withstand harsh environmental hazards and still provide high quality RF microwave interconnects over a long period of time. Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions’ high performance cable assemblies are designed specifically to survive these environments, offering the optimum in electrical and mechanical performance where failure is not an option.
MIL-T-81490 and MIL-DTL-87104 define a series of rigorous requirements to be acceptable in Electronic Warfare (EW) applications. We perform 29 unique tests during acceptance, including 65G vibration, -65° to 200°C at 70,000 feet, and 100,000 flexures.
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions has been selected by major air carriers to satisfy critical insertion loss and phase-match requirements for the FAA-mandated Traffic-Alert Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and Secondary Surveillance (MODE-S) programs. TCAS cables assemblies meet the same reliability and quality standards as EW cables
Spring-Loaded (SL) Coaxial Multi-Port Connector
The spring-loaded (SL) multi-port connector is a specially developed coaxial interface system designed to satisfy high-performance interconnections not previously achievable with multi-port connectors. Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions can provide individual assemblies or complete multi-port assemblies.
The SL connector conforms to such stringent cable assembly specifications as MIL-T-81490 and MIL-DTL-87104. There is no performance degradation when SL cable assemblies are exposed to harsh environments such as extreme vibration, shock, temperature and humidity levels.
To enhance the utility of the SL interconnector system, the following features have been incorporated:
Each cable assembly is individually sealed
- In the field, individual cable assemblies are inserted and removed easily from the rear of the housing
- A single housing can accept transmission lines of different cable sizes
- Low VSWR and insertion loss to 18.5 GHz
A complete family of compatible interface test adapters, terminations, and pigtail assemblies are available.
Housings are available in several configurations. All ports need not be used, but could be available for future additional cables. Rack and panel or thumbscrew mounts are available for securing the connectors. Other configurations are available upon request.
Assemblies with Contacts for ARINC and MIL-DTL-38999 Housings
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions had developed contacts for use in readily available housings to provide low loss multi-port harnesses for less demanding airborne and ground environments. Assemblies with Size 8 and Size 12 contacts (usually used on FA19RX cable) are available for use with M38999 housings for broadband operation in a small convenient package. Multi-port harnesses incorporating these Cobham precision contacts provide reliable operation to 18 GHz with a low VSWR comparable with that of individual assemblies. Installation and removal is accomplished with standard M38999 tools. We can provide individual assemblies or complete multi-port assemblies. One caution: these precision contacts cannot be mated with commercially available M39029 coaxial contacts.
Assemblies with Size 1 and Size 5 contacts are used with ARINC housings to provide reliable operation in commercial and military aircraft for critical applications such as TCAS and Mode-S.
Pin Diode Analog and Digital Attenuators
Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions offers precision PIN diode analog and digital attenuators with reliability and repeatability for the most demanding applications.
Typical attenuators would be monotonic. Select models can be temperature or frequency stabilized as needed. Phase invariant models are also available. Frequency ranges are typical octave bands; however multi-octave bandwidths are available as custom designs. Standard screened devices incorporate epoxy sealed lids and undergo a stringent yet cost effective screening cycle. The attenuators are also available with hermetic seal and high-rel screening for military and space applications.

Continuously Variable Analog and Switch Line Digital Phase Shifters
With complete design and test capability to 40 GHz, we have the resources to help you develop a new design, build to an existing specification or replace an obsolete component.
Analog Phase Shifters
An Analog Phase Shifter Continuously Changes the phase of a microwave signal by varying a DC voltage. Since the DC voltage applied to the diode is reverse bias, the current drain is negligible (typically less than 10mA). A Balanced stripline configuration keeps the VSWR and amplitude ripple to a minimum for all values of phase
Digitally Controlled Analog Phase Shifters
Our digitally controlled Phase Shifters vary the phase of a Microwave signal in response to a TTL compatible logic input signal. The unit consists of an analog phase shifter, series QQ, plus a digital to analog converter. A balanced Strip line configuration keeps the VSWR and amplitude change to a minimum for all values of phase. Standard units operate with 8 BITS allowing 256 discrete values of phase.
Custom Digital Phase Shifters
Our digitally controlled Phase Shifters vary the phase of a Microwave signal in response to a TTL compatible logic input signal. The unit consists of an analog phase shifter, series ACPS, plus a digital to analog converter. A balanced Strip line configuration keeps the VSWR and amplitude change to a minimum for all values of phase. Standard units operate with 8 BITS allowing 256 discrete values of phase.
Phase Trimmer
A Phase Trimmer continuously changes the phase of a microwave signal by varying an adjustment screw.

1 Where there is Ku band satellite coverage, depending on satellite operator and service provider
Deployable wherever there is Ku band coverage
With the advent of new powerful High Throughput Satellite (HTS) services, such as Intelsat EpicNG, smaller antennas can now deliver high throughput service within available Ku-band satellite footprints – now also globally (within all available Ku-band footprints). With an unprecedented G/T of 15.9 dB/K the new SAILOR 600 VSAT Ku is the most powerful 60cm class antenna ever built. Together with HTS, it can provide a stable, high throughput link to enable maritime broadband for any vessel in any Ku-band coverage.
Compact & lightweight
SAILOR 600 VSAT Ku is designed for quick and cost-effective deployment. It is ideal for smaller vessels and because it weighs just 35 kg, it is possible to carry on board, making it especially relevant for installations where no cranes or forklifts are available. Dynamic Motor Brakes mean the radome can stay on during transport and no-power situations once installed, and because it is a super-light solution, it is more cost effective to ship, while a single part number ensures easy ordering.
Making VSAT easier
A wealth of unique features enable unmatched ease and speed of installation, including a single cable between the antenna and below deck unit. P1dB compression over frequency means that antennas can be installed without contacting the NOC for commissioning. SAILOR antennas also feature Automatic Azimuth Calibration using modem Rx Lock, so they can find the ship’s centreline automatically, saving time during installation and reducing errors.
Scientifically designed
SAILOR antennas are tested using real ship motion data in the world’s first Advanced Dynamic Simulator for antennas. Supported by alpha testing in the North Sea, this unique combination of a scientific approach and live testing to product development provides the confidence that SAILOR antennas will deliver the highest availability of service on any vessel type.
Software controlled
The software controlled SAILOR VSAT Technology platform provides unique ease of handling, diagnostics and automatic event reporting, helping service providers to increase service reliability. Remote monitoring facilities include SNMP Traps and a built-in email client, providing real-time support for service providers to meet SLAs and end-users to enjoy uninterrupted connectivity. The latest software includes Shock & Vibration Monitoring, which collects valuable sensor data from extreme weather situations at sea.
Dual Antenna Operation
The SAILOR VSAT Technology platform enables two SAILOR 600 VSAT Ku systems to be operated on a single subscription, on a single modem, making it easier and less costly to ensure high availability of service. Uniquely, the advanced antenna controllers manage the connection between satellite and satellite router automatically, without the need for a costly and complicated RF interface unit.
SAILOR 800 VSAT
SAILOR 800 VSAT is a standardized high-performance 3-axis stabilized Ku-band antenna system with an 83 cm reflector dish.
The SAILOR 800 VSAT provides the same or better radio performance than a typical 1m antenna.

Quick and Easy
Just like the larger, top-selling
SAILOR 900 VSAT, it is quick and easy to deploy – but with a 20% smaller form factor SAILOR 800 VSAT can be used on vessels that otherwise would not consider VSAT because of the size and weight of suitable antennas.
A Top Performer
The focus of the new SAILOR 800 VSAT is on RF performance, G/T, which is >18 dB/K – a value equal to or higher than most other 1m maritime VSAT antennae performance claims – yet it’s much smaller and lighter. This performance makes the new 83cm antenna suitable for vessels that would normally specify a 1m antenna. The unique, class-leading performance of SAILOR 800 VSAT also opens up a world of high quality, reliable communications for a wider number of vessels including workboats, fishing vessels, inland waterways and yachts, whilst providing installation flexibility for vessels of all types and size.
Tried and Tested
If you know SAILOR 900 VSAT, you already know SAILOR 800 VSAT. It uses the same tried & tested features including antenna controller, software, electronics, web MMI, modem and network compatibility to provide reliability and stunning performance.
Lower Cost and Increased up Time
The new SAILOR 800 leaves the factory fully tested and configured, with all RF equipment pre-configured and installed. This reduces the time needed on board for installation, resulting in lower start-up costs for users, whilst the SAILOR build quality ensures reliability and increased up time.
Smaller Form Factor
Customers who would previously have specified a 1m antenna or who may have considered VSAT too ‘big’ for their vessel, can now install a SAILOR 800 VSAT and enjoy the benefits of a 20% smaller form factor with the performance of a much larger antenna.
Two Antennas – One Modem
The SAILOR VSAT range enables you to operate two antenna systems on a single modem without the need for extra hardware to manage the feature; the integrated SAILOR VSAT antenna controllers manage the connection between satellite and modem. This simple dual antenna configuration ensures your vessel has a satellite connection even when there are obstructions in the way.

Single Channel Fibre Optic Rotary Joints (FORJs) are a means to pass signals across rotating interfaces, particularly when transmitting large amounts of data.
Based on multi-mode fiber, Cobham’s Single Channel Fibre Optic Rotary Joints (FORJ’s) have been designed for industrial and military applications. They are passive and bidirectional, and allow the transfer of optical signals across rotational interfaces.
FORJ enables high reliablity for data transmission above Gbit/s (Ethernet 1000 base T, fast multiplexed signals..). Our compact design meets high optical and mechanical performances. Tested and qualified for harsh industrial environment, our FORJ is suitable for applications such as wind turbines, robotics, HD video devices, radars (weather or military), opto-electical devices. Design can be customized acording to requested wavelength and connectors. Also, Cobham can offer a multiplexing system to convert several copper ethernet ways to one optical fiber output.
